Niagara Falls Part 1

This year Flat Hitty and Kitty decided to go on vacation to see Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada. They were very excited to visit a new country and were eager to explore the falls.

Flat Hitty wanted to see the falls up close and personal. She went on a touring boat called, “The Maid of the Mist.” The boat was electric-powered and very quiet, but the roaring of the falls drowned everything out. All the people on the boat wore raincoats.

Flat Hitty was not concerned about a little mist. It’s a good thing she was laminated, because when the boat approached the Horseshoe Falls, she did get wet!

Meanwhile, Kitty stayed on the Canadian side. She decided to dress just like Flat Hitty, wearing a brand new dress in the “Fleur-de-lis Black” print.

Kitty watched from the safety of the shore as Flat Hitty’s boat approached the falls. It was a beautiful sight to see.

On the way back to the dock, Flat Hitty got a good view of the Rainbow Bridge which connects Niagara, Ontario and Niagara, New York.

Next, Flat Hitty visited the Cave of the Winds attraction. It wasn’t really a cave. It was a series of wooden stairways in front of Bridal Veil Falls. There were seagulls everywhere, and it smelled very strongly of fish.

The steps were quite steep and slippery. Flat Hitty was surprised to learn that the stairs are removed each fall due to the problem of ice buildup in the winter. They are reinstalled in spring for the tourists to use.

At the top of all those steps, Flat Hitty endured winds up to 68 mph, but not without getting wet once again.

Kitty’s next stop was the Skylon Tower. She took a shortcut up the hill using the Falls Incline Railway, which has a pair of tram cars to take tourists up and down.

From there, it was a short walk to the Skylon Tower. The tall concrete tower was built in the mid 1960’s and has changed very little in appearance since then. Kitty loved its mid-century, space-age design.

Elevators on the outside of the tower with glass windows gave her a thrilling ride to the top. Here is a photo taken from the elevator on the way up. It shows the American Falls across the gorge.

The Skylon tower has an observation deck 775 feet above the falls with 360 views of the area. Although it was quite windy at the top, Kitty enjoyed the panoramic view.

The girls met for lunch at Maple Leaf Place, where they shared stories and photos of their experiences. It was also a good place to look for souvenirs.

That evening they had fun watching the fireworks from the hotel… the perfect end to a perfect day.

But wait, we’re not finished yet. Read “Niagara Falls Part 2,” and you will learn what Kitty and Flat Hitty did on the second day.
