Halloween is a very special holiday at A Tale of Two Hittys. It is the birthday of Mary Angela Dickens, granddaughter of Charles Dickens, and also the day that she receives her doll Kitty on her 6th birthday, in my fictional tale. This year Kitty is making plans for a very special party with her friends. She tells them to come dressed in costumes, but not to bring gifts. Instead, she will share a special surprise with them.
MacKenna dresses as as a candy-striper nurse and brings her new friend, Sienna, with her. Sienna is dressed as a doctor. Maeve appears as Robin Hood. Mabel and Cleo wear their costumes from the Egyptian Magic Show.
Kitty welcomes Sienna and admires her realistic costume. The stethoscope is the perfect touch.
It’s time to play musical chairs. Kitty starts the music. The girls walk in a circle around the spooky ghosts in the center of the room. When the music stops, Mabel is the only one left standing. They keep playing until Cleo wins in the last round.
After the game, Kitty shows off her riding skills with her pet kitten, Macbeth.
Look out Kitty, Macbeth is going to pounce!
“Don’t worry,” says Kitty. “He just likes playing in the leaves.”
Mabel and Cleo perform a magic trick with a mummy in a case.
Cleo closes the case, and Mabel waves her wand.
The mummy is gone!
After that, Maeve tells the girls a tale about Robin Hood and his merry men.
Kitty announces that it is time for refreshments. She leads the girls to a table in the center of the room with a delicious three layer cake.
After they eat, it’s time for Kitty to share her surprise. All the Hittys gather ’round to see Kitty’s antique handkerchief box. Kitty explains that the box was made by the Flemish Art Company in New York over 100 years ago. The oak leaves and acorns were burned into the wood, a craft called “pyrography.”
And the best part is what’s inside. Kitty has filled it with Halloween treats.
She tells the girls to pick out their favorites. Best Birthday Ever!
