Hitty’s Handkerchief Dress

If you have read the book Hitty: Her First Hundred Years by Rachel Field, then you are familiar with the charming illustrations by artist Dorothy Lathrop. One of those pictures shows a Hitty doll in a nautical print wrap dress made from a handkerchief “of rich crimson silk with anchors and twisted ropes woven all round the border.” That picture inspired me to design this wrap dress for a Hitty doll.

The dress has a solid background with white anchors and stars with a printed rope border. It is 9″ wide and 5″ tall unfolded, fully lined, and it has small white buttons and loops to secure the dress. It also comes with a cotton cord belt which adjusts to fit your Hitty’s waistline. The simple design suits Hitty dolls with a variety of body shapes. It fits Raikes dolls and also thinner dolls such as Michael Langton Hittys.

Of course there is a Crimson Red version, but Hitty dolls love variety, so I made Royal Blue and Navy Blue versions as well.

Here is a view of the dress from the back. As you can see, the cord is long enough to wrap around Hitty’s waist twice and tie in a bow. It can be shortened if desired.

The fabric is Spoonflower’s “Poly Crepe de Chine,” which is very lightweight, with a nice drape and a matte sheen. The fabric content is 100% polyester, which has been pre-washed. I considered making a kit of this design but do not think it’s a good idea. The Poly Crepe de Chine is very slippery and difficult to sew. I have tried other fabric types, but they just don’t have the lightweight quality needed for this dress. That is why I decided to sell only completed dresses, to save buyers some frustration!
